I thought the Beastie Boys would have been on the show.
If you want successful and respected.... then you've got it in the Beastie Boys.
How many acts (regardless of color or genre.... in recent times) have maintained as they have?
I'm sure putting out an album every 5 friggin' years helps the concern of relevancy....

I'm sure Serch if over Professor Booty.
I didn't know MCA had it in him.

Great list ! Can anyone tell whatever happened to:

Knucklehedz - I knew they were down with Parrish Smith when EPMD broke up and had that hip hop classic "All She Wanted Was a Quickie".

Ali Dee - I remember that video, "Who's the Flava? (Dees the Flava)" years back. He used to be one half of the group "Prophets of Unity". Yes, I watched way too much Rap City.

Y.B.T. - I liked "Tap the Bottle". R.I.P. worst gimmick ever.

Did you know that Ali Dee is dissing Young Black Teenagers in the video for "Who's Da Flava"?

In the video there is a blind man with a can (for change) and it has the initials YBT written on the side of it.

Supposedly YBT bumped Ali out of the group.  Ali did work with Hank Shocklee and the Bomb squad.... the Bomb Squad did production for YBT's album "Dead End Kidz doin' Lifetime Bidz"....
They bumped Ali out and took some of his ideas and beats.

The Knucklehedz!!!! I remember in the video for "Crossover" with EPMD that was one of the 1st times they were on camera.  Right at the end of the video.

In regards to Ali Dee and Profits of Unity.... Ali Dee (white guy) and Zone-TDK (black guy) formed the group called "The Next School".... this was in 89 (pretty early with a white/black combo)....I think the album was Profits of Unity with the single also by that title.  The best track on there though was called "Good to Go".

how about Jesse Jaymes
"Shake it like a White Girl"?????

Ali dee was recently incarnated under the name Mister Jones.  A pop, punk, rap outfit.

Anybody remember a group called "Sonny Bones"?
They were on a show on MTV back in 98 where groups would compete live on TV then judges (or the audience) would select who would "make it".
Not the same as a show called "12 Angry Viewers".... where every good group got panned (Lordz of Brooklyn).

I thought for sure Eminem would have made an appearance (or are they saving him for the grand finale??
I actually preferred seeing some of the old school guys like House of Pain and Brand Nubian, because personally, (and I know I'll catch flack for this), I think Eminem is overrated.  Yeah, I said it, and that's honestly how I feel.  Peace.

I didn't know there would be someone out there who knew so much about Ali Dee, but thanks ! Now I remember that the group was called the Next School and Profits of Unity was the song. I think the hook went like this, "Yo TDK (What's up?)...take this opportunity....we are the profits of unity !" I remember Ali Dee because he kind of sounded like Pete Nice. In fact that group was a poor 3rd Bass clone probably. It's been years since I saw that video.

Regarding YBT remember when one of them with the dreadlocks co-starred in House Party 2 with Kid n Play ? I think his character was called Jamal and at one point Kid says to him, "Will you please act white !".

This is great....I still have my Next School tape.....at the time, I thought they were going to take off.  I remember seeing them on Dee Barnes' show.  They had some pretty good dancers - back when every group had at least two dancers.  Does anyone remember the "Throwdown Twins" w/DJ Epic?

East,
I completely agree with your Em assessment.

I can't believe this many people know/rememer The Next School.
That's crazy.
There were some good tracks on that album.
I don't have my tape anymore.... but I remember it had TDk and Ali Dee right on the front cover.... I think it was a blue and black color scheme cover.
Ali Dee's 1st solo album was called "Bring it On" (also a name of a track on there).  But it was originally titled "Ali Dee & the 40 Thieves".
The funny thing is, production-wise he was pretty good.
Good enough for the Hank Shocklee to pick up.

Side-bit:  Ali Dee yells the "Can't Truss it!!" in the song, "Can't Truss it" by PE.

Yeah, the Next School album cover looked like a still photo from the Prophets of Unity video....slightly blurred.  I wonder how many records they sold?  I also bought his solo album.  You're right....production was good.

Do you remember Kid Panic's wack album?  Ali Dee produced some tracks, and I think Firstborn from YBT produced a track.  I had heard that Chuck D & the Bomb Squad originally wanted to sign Vanilla Ice (no joke).  After they didn't sign him, they tried to "create" a clone in Kid Panic.   Anyone remember Jon Shecter's (from the Source Magazine) group BMOC?

You're right!  Just a still from the video.  Wish that was up on youtube.   I thought the picture was kind of blurred.

I had no idea that they were trying to sign V.I..

BMOC.... Daaaaaaaaaamn.  I completely forgot about them.

What about Smokin' Suckaz wit Logic?

Who was that italian guy who was calling out Jay-Z?
Genovese?

I think he had a track directed at Jay-Z back in 98 or 99.

I'm not sure.  Was Genovese the guy in Queen Latifa's Flavor Unit?  Was it Don Scavone or Jo Jo Pellegrino?......just guessing.

Did PE sample an Ali Dee song with him saying "Can't Truss It" or was he in the studio with PE & just said it there? I always thought it was Flav saying "Can't Truss It".
